Pneumatics

In our experience pneumatic controls and interfacing electronics can be problematic mainly on vessels as they get older. We now have a service facility that can provide onsite and workshop services to fault-find and overhaul or replace components as necessary.

Equipment can be refurbished at the customer’s site or within our workshops. We can also fault-find an existing system and carry out sea trials as required.

The equipment types we most regularly service are:

• Valves
• I to P converters,
• Interlocks
• Pressure regulators
• Changeover valves
• Electronic bridge controls

We have revised competitive labour rates for our pneumatic controls onsite services; please contact us for further details of this.

Training Courses

The training courses offered by EGS began after demand from several customers to provide specialist training for their technical staff. In response, we put together a series of training modules designed to cover a variety of procedures for cost-effective, preventive maintenance aimed at maximising up-time.

Process

Firstly we like to meet with our customer to thoroughly discuss the equipment that they have and their requirements and expectations of the course.

The training will then take place either at our factory in Fordham, or on site as required by the customer. These courses generally take place over two days but will vary according the needs and time restraints of the customer.

Each course is tailored to the needs of the customer and provides a balance of theory and practical issues. We can cover a wide variety of products including mechanical governors and electronic modules.

In order to maintain high quality standards of training, we advise customers to plan for a maximum of six employees to attend each course. All accommodation and meals can be provided.

Feedback

These courses are highly recommended by us as a fantastic measure to reduce the risk of unplanned downtime as they maximise employee awareness on all aspects of governor set-up for minimum disturbance to their operation. They have been particularly successful over the years; take a look at some of the feedback comments we received via questionnaire that our customers kindly took the time to answer:

  • “Well thought out and well-presented course. Instructor extremely knowledgeable on subject matter. Plenty of opportunity given to hands on adjustments.”
  • “Good mix of practical and theory; a good insight into governor operation. Learned a lot of ‘Don’t Dos’. Nice to have an opportunity to play with the real thing. User-friendly, well planned, well presented and a great lunch… by far one of our better courses.”
  • “It was great to have so much information to take away from the course on a memory stick.”
  • “Catered for all levels of understanding.”
  • “Have come away from the course feeling a lot more confident in tackling any problems that may occur on board.”

4. Inspection

Inspection

All parts are laid out and fully inspected for any wear or damage. Specialist Woodward test equipment is used to examine the condition of the rotor and pilot valve; the main controlling parts of the governor.

All parts are checked against the specification of the governor to ensure they are correct parts. The Technician then uses the bill of materials to make a list of all the parts that need replacing, which are documented with a coded system indicating the reasons behind the necessary replacement. This list is then sent to the customer for approval. If necessary, photographic evidence can be sent to the customer to show the damage that has taken place and why it is advisable to replace the parts.

5. Rebuild and Respray

Rebuild and Respray

Upon approval, the necessary replacement parts are drawn out of stock and the governor is rebuilt to as-new manufacturer’s condition. On completion, it is then repainted and the appropriate decals are applied.

6. Test

Test

The governor is then sent to one of our Test Engineers who will test the governor according to the manufacturer specifications unique to each governor and a full set of readings are formulated onto an official test certificate.

7. Delivery

Delivery

Finally the governor is carefully packaged in line with the recommendations provided by the manufacturer to ensure safe receipt and is sent either by courier or one of our drivers.
